Membership
Joining a church is more than merely attending or even volunteering. It is to enter into a covenant with a group of people to whom you commit yourself and they likewise commit themselves to you; the beginning of authentic Christian community.
- The Church is the only institution on earth that Jesus commissioned to be his representative (Matthew 16:18).
- The Church is more than just a gathering of Christians – it has biblical standards and structure that God has appointed (i.e. elders, sacraments, etc.), that gives it priority over para-church organizations (as important as such ministry partners may be).
- The Church is the context where Christianity is most naturally and biblically displayed (consider the difference between a family and an orphanage); the church community is able to help its own stand against trends like postmodernism, Western individualism, and any other teachings/philosophies that run contrary to the way we were created to live and the Gospel.
- The Church is where God can more fully be known; there are some attributes of God that cannot be fully displayed apart from community. As C.S. Lewis said in The Four Loves (Harvest Books, 1960), there are aspects of God’s nature and character that others will see better than you, and vice versa.
Thus, every Christian should join a church in obedience to Christ, whether or not that church is City Church Denver.
